The shaping of network features by biological constraints

Many properties of biological networks seem "remarkable". Those properties include structural characteristics such as modularity or the presence of over-represented network motifs. They also include functional aspects, including robustness of cells and organisms to perturbations, evolvability, etc. We provide a panorama that gives reason to believe that such properties in fact emerge quite naturally, regardless of the details of the modeling framework, providing evidence that this "network function shapes network structure" scenario is of broad applicability.
